Block's Dessa research lab announced Dessa, a full-duplex speech-to-speech model trained from scratch only on human conversation, with no text pretraining. It listens and responds at the same time, infers faster than real time, and runs locally on a MacBook Pro M4 Max or better. Block is giving a small group of AI safety researchers early access ahead of wider availability. The announcement was reported on October 21, 2026.
